CapAsia Program

About

The CapAsia (College of Architecture and Planning in Asia) program provides a cultural immersion in Asia through collaborative projects carried out with students of partnering schools, with the help of a network of scholars, educators, and professionals in the region. The cross-cultural experience is facilitated by an especially designed curriculum, collaborative workshops, strategic field trips, and accommodations. The immediate aim of the field study is to profoundly enhance the critical and creative thinking capability of the participants through the learning of social, cultural, and spatial practices, as well as design and planning approaches in Asia, from standpoints empathic to local people in the area we work, their cultures, and world views. Most crucially, it adopts a reflective learning strategy through which the students learn about their own cultures, environments, and selves.

As one Fulbright-Hays reviewer commented:

"the focus on 'learning from' rather than 'learning about' as well as on learning from doing projects with host country peers rather than doing projects for them is refreshingly honest about where knowledge resides; it also models and reinforces a respectful intercultural attitude and global stance that is sorely needed."
